Mukteshwar Temple

Mukteshwar Temple is situated at Bhubaneshwar, the capital city of Orissa. It is considered as one of the jewel of Orissa. This temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. The name of the temple Mukteshwar signifies “Lord who gives freedom through yoga”. It has gained its solid structure in 10th century AD. This temple is well known to the world due to its beautiful stone festoon, and also due to its porch which has a ceiling of eight petal lotus. The architecture of the temple comprises different engraved idols which includes lion head motif. The whole of the temple is carved with statues of ascetics in different postures of contemplation. This temple also entails so many other small shrines having a number of lingams of Lord Shiva. In the eastern part of the temple there lies a well. Whosoever takes a dip into the well will be free from the problem of infertility.

Getting There

Visitors can move towards Mukteshwar Temple by three modes i.e. Road, Train and Air. By road we use buses and taxis to reach this temple. The journey from bus is carried out by Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC). There is a railway route of 6 km from Bhubaneswar railway station to Mukteswar Temple. The journey from air is carried out by Biju Patnaik Airport also called Bhubaneswar airport.

Security And Some Tips

For the purpose of complete security there exists the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) which provides the protection to visitors in every respect. There should be a separate arrangement for security of luggage within the temple itself.

When To Visit

The most suitable time to visit this temple is from October to April. The timings of the temple from Monday to Sunday are 6:30 AM to 10 PM and at public holidays is 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM. People prefer to visit this temple at the time of Mukteshwar Utsav which is a dance festival in Orissa.

What To See And Do

While having the visit of this temple so many pictures of people doing yoga are shown and also there exists the images which are telling stories and folk tales from the tales of Panchatantra and Jain Saints. The porch is adorned with stunning figure of lotus and lion heads. It comprises other different figures of several gods, goddesses, many birds, animals and religious scenes. The front part of the temple wall is covered with Hindu deities like Saraswathi, Ganesha and Lakulisha. A shivling is placed in the temple which is considered as the main deity. The Shivling is centered on by the deities of Brahma, Vishnu, Parvati, Hanuman, Ganesh and Nandi. People use to offer their prayers to these deities.

There are many hotels near Biju Patnaik Airport of Bhubaneshwar to stay and take rest along with the food facility. Festivals

There are two festivals which are celebrated here with full joy and delight. These festivals are- The Mukteshwar Utsav and The Ekamra Utsav, in which Mukteshwar Utsav is a dance festival and Ekamra Utsav is a festival celebrated by the people who believe in Hinduism. So many crowds of the people gather here during these festivals.

Side Trips

There are many other places to visit near Mukteshwar Temple. These places are- Lingaraj Temple, Vaital Deul, Rajarani Temple, Parasurameswara Temple and Brahmeswara Temple. They are the sign of marvelous ancient and religious beauty.

Travel Tips

Visitors should carry video camera with themselves so as to trap all of the memorable moments of temple’s visit in a compact place. Visitor should also take personal diary so as to write out their happy feeling at the time of visit. Visitors should also hire a travel guide so as to be well known about each and every part of the temple including its history.
