Jal Mahal is also known as Water Palace, which is situated on the middle of the Man Sagar Lake in the Jaipur City. The Palace and lake around the Jal Mahal were renovated in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II. The Jal Mahal Palace according to its name it is a fabulous palace which is floating on water. It is located at a distance of 6.5 kms away from Pink City. This palace is standing inside the Man Sagar Lake. The Man Sagar Lake was formed by constructing a dam between the two hills by Sawai Man Singh. This is a five storey palace, out of which the first four floors are located under water, only the top floor of this palace enjoys the sunshine and rain. Even after the 200 years of construction, still its architectural beauty is the same as it was before. Jal Mahal got its identity in the year 1799. The palace looks very beautiful from the Man Sagar Lake from where the flock of birds can be seen. One can find the shrines of the Royal families on the back side of this palace. The Mansagar Lake is also a bird watcher paradise as it serves as the home of a variety of local as well as migratory birds.
A project has been started for renovation of Jal Mahal. There are three phases in total in this project. The first phase of the project includes restoration of the Man Sagar Lake and the Jal Mahal. The second phase includes entertainment and retail facilities and will be open to public on January 2013. Work on the second phase has been started. The third phase of the project will be completed by January 2014 and it includes up gradation of hotels. Total estimated cost of this project is Rs. 1000 crores.
The Man Sagar Lake is now a muddy swamp throughout the year. The restoration efforts for Jal Mahal and Man Sagar Lake were announced in the year 2005 under a public private parternship of Kalpatru group and Jaipur Jewellers and Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation during the Congress Government of Ashok Gehlot. The main aim of this project was to make Jal Mahal as a green leisure destination tourist place. The other parts of the project include Jal Tarang which means green leisure destination for visitors. This project includes renovation of Jal Mahal, Man Sagar Lake and also arranging an environment friendly accommodation for tourists. The Ecological Restoration Project of Man Sagar Lake is sanctioned under National Lake Conservation Plan of Ministry of Environment and Forest.
Forest Department will do the forestation of forest which comes under the part of Man Sagar Lake. After removal of nutrients through tertiary treatment the lake water level will also be maintained by supply of 7.0 MLD treated effluent of Sewerage Treatment Plant. The quality of water as well quantity will be approved. Renovation will be done by construction of diversion drain which will connect the Brahmapuri Nalla and Nagatali Nalla. Territory Treatment Plant will also be set up for Territory wet Land Treatment. Effluent Treatment plant will also be set up. Settling tank will also be constructed from Amber. Identification of the polluting carpets will also be done. Irrigation diversion channel will also be constructed in downstream of dam. Dams will also be checked which are located on Nothern Eastern side for polluted water in it. Government departments which are involved in this project are Jaipur Development Authority, Rajasthan Urban Infrastructure Development which will focus on rehabilitation of North Zone. Irrigation Department is also included in this project which will mainly look at lowering down of waste water. Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation is looking at the selection of private sector development. Jal Mahal is going to be a restoration effort which is mainly including cleaning of lake, restoring the garden and also cleaning up the monument.
