History of the Karva Chauth Puja
Since, girls got married at the early age and moved to the other villages to live with their in laws. If they face any problem they hesitate to talk for the same to their in laws and she also far from her parents, relatives and there was no fast mode of communication also available that time, so they are unable to talk to anyone. Thus, the custom begins in which bride befriend other woman who would become her sister or friend for the whole life when she reached her in laws house. They were like god sisters or god friends. At the time of marriage, their friendship was sanctioned via Hindu ceremony. So, later if the woman faces any issue then she can talk or seek help from her. This begins Karwa Chauth as an occasion in which relationship of woman with her god friend or god sister was celebrated.
Fasting for the husbands and praying for them came later and is not primary.
What is the significance of the Karva Chauth Puja?
Karva Chauth has a great significance for the Hindu married Women as on this day they keep fast from early morning i.e. sunrise to the rise of moon for the long life, wealth and prosperity of their husbands. Sometimes, unmarried girls keep the fast for their desired life partner or for their better half also. In this fast, they don’t eat and drink anything for the whole day.

What is the vidhi (method) of worship/ Karva Chauth Puja ?
All the women sits along with their bayas around the idol of Goddess Gauri made or prepared from the cow dung at a place like garden, temple or someone’s house. They are having a pot known as “karva” which is full of water and tied with the thread, red in colour, containing aipun, kharia, roli keep in front of them. To begin the puja, they put drops of water and apply roli, chawal to the Goddess Gauri. Then story of Karwa Chauth is narrated by any lady and they pray for the longevity of their husbands. After a while when the moon rises, they start offering prayers and in some states, women see their husbands through a sieve and with this their fast breaks. Husbands offer first morsel of food and first sip of water to their wives.
How to celebrate this Karva Chauth Puja ?
Kava Chauth is a one day celebration which begins before the sunrise by consuming “sargi” given by the mother in law to their daughter in law. Then their fast started and in the evening, all the women get dressed up properly, apply some make up, carry the jewellery, and apply mehndi in their hands before a day as overall they have to look very beautiful almost like an Indian bride. With the woman, some husbands also carry new dress and try to look good. On the rise of the moon, after puja gets over, women enjoy great Indian foods and some sweets with their husband and other family members, prepared on the eve of this occasion. On this day, women get gifts which enhance her beauty like one dress, bangles, bindi, sindur, kajal, lipstick etc. from their mother in law.

Karva Chauth is celebrated on the day four after the full moon (Krishna Paksha) comes in the month of Kartik.

In North-Western India, this puja is considered as more important and mainly women keep fast in the states of U.P., Bihar, J&K, H.P., Punjab, M.P., Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Jharkhand.
