Moment of glory

The pink city of Jaipur has its cheeks pink in celebration and why mustn’t they be? A new feather is up its cap. More aptly put the Jaipur metro is a cap in itself. On its first trial run on 18th Sept 2013 the metro station became more of a tourist spot and had more than 10000 people to catch a glimpse at the Mansarovar depot.

It’s a proud moment as the state of the art mass transit system built by it(in collaboration with DMRC) is a clean, safe, comfortable, smooth, quick and efficient transportation medium and it is a positive contributor to both the economy and the environment. The metro rail system is nothing less than a revolution for Jaipur..

An Important news is that a skywalk would be constructed to ensure seamless connectivity between the metro and Jaipur`s railway station. This would give metro commuters direct access to the railway platforms.

Why metro is much needed in Jaipur

  • Public Transport System provides efficiency in usage of space and energy, with reduced level of air and noise pollution
  • With most arterial roads having more traffic volume more then there designed capacity the time has come to persuade people out of their cars
  • The vehicles per 1000 people is higher in Jaipur even compared to Delhi!.As per CSE report of 2012 Jaipur has 551 vehicles per 1000 compared to 332 of Delhi.
  • Deadly particles like PM10 are increasing constantly and are 2.8 times higher than standard.
  • Not only is it a breather in terms of the environment but also in terms of money saving as tickets are fairly priced and it would be kind on your wallet especially in times of skyrocketing fuel prices.
  • Compared to road-based system it requires 1/5th energy per passenger km
  • When underground it occupies no road space and 2 meters if the track is elevated
  • Safer then roads
  • Journey time is reduced between 50% and 75%
  • Jaipur has a fleet of about 250 buses and 1800 mini buses which causes major chaos on the roads. This would be reduced by coming of metro.

Facts about Jaipur metro

  • Jaipur Metro Rail system is India's fourth Metro Rail system after those in Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore
  • The foundation stones of the metro were put on feb 24 2011 which makes the first phase complete in record two and half years.
  • Flagged off by Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, The world class Jaipur Metro, had its first trial run on 18th sept 2013.
  • It went at a speed of 40-45 km per hour from Mansarovar Station passing through New Aatish Market, Vivek Vihar and Shyam Nagar (outer) and returned to Mansarovar.
  • The first trial run being conducted in 2 and half years is a record in the country and even trial of Delhi metros first corridor took more than 5 years.
  • It would be running commercially from early 2014
  • Jaipur metro is built by Collaboration between DMRC(Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) and JMRC(Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation).
  • DMRC is in charge of the operation and maintenance in the 1st year
  • The metro corridor is built on standard gauge.

It is to be made in 2 phases:

  • Phase 1 : Green Line: Mansarovar, Badi chapar via Civillines and Chandpole
  • The green line would cost an approximated 3200 crore and start by 2014
  • Stations = 11 (3 underground + 8 elevated)
  • Phase 2 : Orange line: Sitapura industrial area to Ambabari via Ajmeri gate and MI road
  • Stations= 22 (5 underground + 17 elevated)
  • One train costs between 8-10 crore
  • JMRC has permission to allow coaches borrowed from Delhi Metro to run at a maximum 45 kph
  • A short train consists of 4 coaches which can be increased to 6 Coaches to meet requirements of the future.

Running services : 19 hours of the day (5 AM to Midnight)

  • Station dwell time of 30 seconds
  • A Scheduled speed of 32 kmph
