Khatu is a small township that is placed at a distance of around 65 km from Sikar, Rajasthan. Khatu village is of great religious significance in the Sikar District of Rajasthan. The famous Khatu shyamji's temple placed at the center of the township in Khatu village was built with exquisite “Makrana marble”. Great Fables about the Temple:

The temple of Khatu Shyam Ji is revered as a brave warrior Berbrik (Shyam Baba), the grandson of Bhima (the 2nd of Pandava brothers). During his early days, Barbarika was a courageous combatant. He mastered all the rivalry methods from his own mother. During the great Mahabharata warfare between the Pandavas & the Kauravas, Barbarik also wanted to fight in the combat. However, the control of 3 heavenly arrows, that had the power to bring the combat to an end in a tick, had Barbarik unconquerable. Since Barbarik made a proimise to his mother that he would hold up the weaker team in the combat and not the honorable one, Barbarik commenced to join in in the combat. In contrast, Lord Krishna very well knows that trounce of the Kauravas was unavoidable. Lord Krishna understood that if, Barbarik stands on the side of Kauravas, the war will end with an uncertainty on honesty. So, Lord Krishna disguised himself as a Brahmin and asked Barbarik to surrender his head as a contribution (daan). Barbarik willingly surrendered his head to Lord Krishna. Subsequently, Lord Krishna revealed his divine form to Barbarik and blessed him with 2 fortunate things. Initially, Barbarik’s head was placed on summit of a small mount from where he could observe the whole warfare. Secondly, Lord Krishna blessed Barbarik to be remembered on the world eternally. Also, Lord Krishan promised Barbarik that during Kaliyuga (present age), Barbarik’s head will be worshipped by people in the name of Shyam (Lord Krishna). After the completion of Mahabharata combat, Barbarik’s head was buried in Khatu village. After several years, a head was spotted at Khatu and was worshipped by a Brahmin for several years. Before long, the Khatu’s emperor had a vision that motivated him to construct a temple at that spot and place the head of the daring Barbarik who is worshipped as Khatu Shyam Baba in the present day.

Inimitable architecture of the Shrine:

In the beginning, the Khatu Shyam ji temple was constructed by Shri Roop Singh Chauhan and his wife Smt. Narmada Kanwar before 975 years. Later, in 1720 A.D., “Diwan Abhaisingh” on the command of Jodhpur King, refurbished the primeval temple. As a result, Khatu Shyam ji temple obtained its current look during this period. The idol was preserved in the Sanctorum chamber. Khatu Shyam ji temple is prosperous in its architectural abundance. Lime motors and Marble have been expansively employed while they built this temple. The shutters of the Sanctum Sanctorum are protected with gorgeous silver sheets outside Jagmohan (the prayer area). The exact measurement of the prayer hall is 12.3 m x 4.7 m. The walls of the temple are scrupulously painted in such a way they represent the legendary panoramas. The entry gateway and exit gateway are constructed with marble. The exterior are also made out of marble and attribute decorative flower-patterned designs. Falgun Mela at Khatu Shyam temple:

Countless people from various parts of the country arrive here to enjoy this fortunate event. Millions of devotees’ visit Khatu Shyam ji temple during the 4 days celebration. Special preparations are made for the visiting devotees (for their food and shelter) in all the Vishram Grihas and Dharamshalas. Devotees wait in long meandering queues for hours and hours to get a second’s glimpse of the divinity.

During the fair, the entire township plus the temple is lightened up and looks gorgeous. It is believed that devotees who come here to get the blessings of Khatu Shyam ji will get free from all pains and worries of their lives and their wishes are all rewarded.

The Holy Shyam Kund:

Shyam Kund is the sanctified pond in the vicinity of the temple from where the SHISH was repossessed. Devotees believe that a quick dip in this holy pond heals all kinds’ illness and bestows well being and happiness.

Pleasing Shyam Bagichi:

Shyam Bagichi is a sanctified garden of the temple. This is the garden where the flowers are picked and offered to the divinity. Also, the crypt of great aficionado “Lt. Aloo Singhji” is placed in the building.

The Powerful Gouri Shankar Temple:

The Gouri Shankar Temple is devoted to the powerful God Shiva. This temple is placed in close proximity to the Shyamji’s temple. According to a fable, when the warriors of Aurangzeb (Mughal King) tried to obliterate this temple by attacking the sacred Shiva Linga with a lance, blood springs emerged out from the Shiva Linga. On seeing this, the armed forces got frightened and left the temple. Visitors can still notice the blotch of the lance on the Shiva Linga.

Nishan Yatra:

People believe that their desires are approved if they offer a Nishan at the shrine. Basically, Nishan is a flag in triangular shape. Nishan is of a specific size that is made out of fabric. A person carries Nishan in his hands while he walks the entire route from “Ringas to Khatu” (17kms). Millions of Nishans are offered at the time of Falgun Mela. Nishan is hoisted up on a bamboo stick.
