NINTH WORLD CONGRESS OF DIABETES STARTS IN JAIPUR

RAJASTHAN MEDICAL & HEALTH MINISTER CALLS FOR SPREADING AWARENESS ON LIFESTYLE DISEASES

Jaipur, Feb. 28: The Rajasthan Medical and Health Minister, Dr. Raghu Sharma, today gave a fervent call for spreading awareness on the lifestyle diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, which are taking a heavy toll and causing other serious ailments such as heart attack, paralysis, kidney failure and blindness among the people. About four crore people in India at present and an identical number of people are likely to become diabetes patients in the next few years.

Dr. Sharma inaugurated “Diabetes India-2019”, the Ninth World Congress on Diabetes, at the Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Centre (JECC) here today in the presence of over 40 eminent international experts and 1,500 experts from across India. The experts will deliberate on the interdisciplinary scientific exchange and share their experiences and expertise in the field of diabetes during the four-day conference, which will continue till March 3.

Dr. Sharma said it was important to give regular training to the physicians and experts working in the field of prevention and treatment of diabetes to check its spread. While the World Congress on Diabetes is a praiseworthy step in that direction, Mr. Sharma noted with concern that even the children in the age group of 15 to 20 years had type-2 diabetes which was earlier prevalent among the seniors.

The Diabetes India president and former president of International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Dr. S.M. Sadikot, and the Organising Chairman and Principal of Sawai Man Singh Hospital, Jaipur, Dr. Sudhir Bhandari, said the scientific sessions during the conference would be devoted to new research, experiments, prevention, and treatment of diabetes.

The Rajasthan Government's Medical Education Secretary, Mr. Hemant Kumar Gera, praised the novel initiative of Type-1 Leadership programme launched on the first day of the conference in which patients suffering from type-1 diabetes will be trained and motivated to be leaders for helping out other patients suffering from the diseases. To actively involve and ensure their ongoing training, a new group named “D-Genius” has been created and its first meeting took place on the first day of the conference today.

Mr. Gera said the regular screening, timely diagnosis, and awareness about lifestyle modifications could easily prevent the complications related to diabetes. Management of diabetic patients usually demands teamwork with the involvement of specialists from various fields, he noted.

The scientific programme in a four-day conference has been designed to cover every aspect of managing diabetes in a resource-constrained setting to the best of care institutes. Separate workshops will be organized for special topics, such as diabetic foot, diabetes in pregnancy, diabetes in young, research methodology etc. There will be paper and poster presentations for young scientist and a quiz for postgraduate medical students as well.

The Executive Secretary, Diabetes India, Dr. Banshi Saboo, said the experts who are participating in the conference include the current president of IDF, Prof. Nam H. Cho from South Korea; Dr. Anoop Misra, former honorary physician to the Prime Minister of India; Dr. Anil Bhansali from PGI, Chandigarh; and Dr. Shashank Joshi from Lilawati Hospital, Mumbai. Representatives from the U.S., England, Austria, Japan, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Norway, and the Maldives are also attending the conference.

The Programme Chairman, Dr. Arvind Gupta, said that more than 150 research papers would be presented and more than 200 scientific deliberations will be held during the global event. The Rajasthan Chief Minister, Mr. Ashok Gehlot, had earlier this week launched digital apps through which the complete information about “Diabetes India 2019” can be obtained and the calories burnt by an individual can be recorded.
