Galta ji temple is also known as Monkey temple which is situated in the Aravalli mountain ranges in the eastern part of the Jaipur City. There are many other temples are also located in Galta ji. One important fact which is linked with this temple is that some part of Ram Charit Manas i.e. Ramayana is written in this temple by Goswami Tulsidas. Galta Ji located 20 kms away from Jaipur. It is said that the Galta kund has curative powers and because of it this is known as pilgrim centre. There is a small temple of Sun god which is built by Diwan Kriparam and is located on the top of the highest peak.
This temple is one of the oldest temples in Jaipur, Rajasthan. This temple is famous for its pilgrimage from centuries which gives dedication to Lord Hanuman ji as well as to Surya Dev. Galta Ji temple was established in the 18th century and from that day onwards this temple is considered as the spiritual pilgrims in Jaipur, Rajasthan. This place is considered as sacred and holy pilgrim for the Hindus as saint Galav did Tapasaya for several years in Galtaji. But the temple was built by Diwan Rao Kriparam who was a courtier of Sawai Jai Singh II in the eighteenth century, much later. The temple looks like a mansion or a haveli because of its magnificent architecture.
The Galtaji’s main temple is built in pink stone and was built in the eighteenth century. This is one of the famous temples on the top of the hill. The temple contains a large complex as well and is known because of the large number of tribes of monkeys who lives here
This temple is supported by the Birla Family. We can see a good view of the Jaigarh fort from here. While you enter into the complex you can see one temple at your right side and one at left side. The temple has noise of drums as well as of bells. Behind this, three holy tanks are situated , out of which one is Galta kund which is the holiest kund out of the three. As it is said that by taking bath in this kund removes all your sins and make you pavitra. The source of water for this lake has been carved in the shape of a cow's mouth similar to that of the starting point of river Ganges. It is considered sacred to bathe in the lake before entering the main temple of the sage Galva.
There are two pools situated near this temple. As in earlier days men and women have separate pools to swim but with time the same pool is used by both men and women. And the third pool is for holy monkeys, this temple apart from sun is also dedicated to God of Apes , Shri Hanuman. This temple has the ridge of picturesque and also provides a great view of the whole city.
Galta Ji Temple of Jaipur is popular among the foreign tourists as “Monkey Temple”. It is called thus because the temple is home to a large number of monkeys. These monkeys are quite friendly with the visitors.
