The Tara Temple is sited in Tarapith (a trivial town lying near Rampurhat within the Birbhum districtin West Bengal).The eyeball of Sati had fallen in this place and this eyeball is termed as Tara and thus the town was named as Tarapith.It is completely devoted to Goddess Tara (other form of Goddess Kali). It is the sacred shrine of Hindus. It has occupied a place among 52 Shakti Peethas. If a devotee does worship with real heart and spirit then the accomplishment of his/her wishes takes place. The goddess Tara is a part of splendid power and represents benevolence. The benevolence and blessing of Mata changed the life of man in such a way that he/she gets rid of from any sort of pain and problem. It is also considered as Mahapeetha. People from distant places visit this temple in a large number. According to saying, “it is not necessary that Mata use not only to bless her devotee within the temple, she blessed him/her in any corner of the universe.”

Getting There

First of all we have to reach kolkatta and that is through three modes: road, rail and air. One can reach   Kolkatta by self-drive. There are many cities connected by railway network to Kolkatta. The journey through air can be carried out by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport which is at Dumdum. After reaching Kolkatta one can reach Birbhum by mean of road and rail. The distance can be covered up on road by mean of Panagarh-Morgram Expressway. The distance on rail can be carried out by Howrah-Sahibganj loop of the Eastern Railway. After reaching Birbhum one can reach Tarapith Temple by hiring car, taxi and bus.

Security And Some Tips

There are major security arrangements in the temple premises of Tarapith Temple in which CCTV cameras are one of them. There are metal detectors at the entrance and exit gate of the temple so as to avoid the unwanted element like knife, gun etc. One should not carry cash and ornaments with them. One should keep their luggage at safe and secure place.

When To Visit

This shrine can be visited throughout the year. The best time to visit this temple is from October to March. It is opened all the days of the week. The timings of the temple are 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM. The duration of the visit of this temple is 1 to 2 hours.

What To See And Do

The size of the temple is intermediate. The temple is made up of thick red brick. Thewalls of the temple are made up of marble. The temple comprises bent roof. The front of the temple is muddy. It depicts the different sights of Hindu grahanth lionizing various forms of Shakti like Durga, Kali. The gates of the innermost temple are sculpted in a stunning way and are made up of metal revealing the holy flower hibiscuses of Mata and it also comprises pictures of Lord Shankara and Chakra. There is a holy kund near this temple. Aficionados use to have bath (dupki) in it before its worship. This kund empowers the devotees in such a way that the dead ones are converted into living beings. Unlike other shrines, the mutton, wine or blood are offered to the idol by sacrificing (bali) goats. The deity of goddess is made up of silver. It has two hands. The snakes and skulls are rolled up around her neck like garlands. The idol is characterized by flowing hairs and bulging tongue. She is decorated with holy filaments and silk saree. It consists of the idol of Shiva lying in her left lap slurping her breast. Bananas, coconut, fruits and sweets are distributed here as Prasad.
