Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage and Diverse Cultural Traditions of India' – 2 days' virtual event from the village of Moklawas, Jodhpur, starts on August 9, 2020

 

August 7, 2020. A webinar with international experts' views and virtual demonstrations of various community-based traditional performances and crafts for ‘Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage and Diverse Cultural Traditions of India' will be held on August 9-10, 2020, from Arna Jharna Museum of Rajasthan in village Moklawas of Jodhpur district.

On the occasion of The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, Lok Samvad Sansthan, Jaipur, and Rupayan Sansthan, Jodhpur, and UNESCO well as nationally reputed Universities and Institutions jointly collaborate to organize events. The activities include storytelling, performing arts and crafts, and showcase indigenous community-based traditional skills to raise awareness for preservation, promotion, and addressing indigenous peoples' needs and concerns.

Mr. Kalyan Singh Kothari, Secretary, Lok Samvad Sansthan said: “This event has attracted a huge response through social media campaign and received more than 600 registrations till August 6 for participation from 50 countries including USA, UK, France, Indonesia, Malaysia, Canada, South Africa, Vietnam, Burundi, Bangladesh, and from across 25 states of India. We expected that more than 1,000 registrations would be done to reach out to audiences worldwide and across the country.

Rupayan Sansthan will showcase a variety of community-based traditional crafts, artworks, and performances such as puppet making (traditional puppeteer), broom making (professional broom maker), pottery making by nomadic tribes, Kalbelia dance and a short film on the intangible cultural heritage, etc. through a virtual visit to Arna Jharna museum of Rupayan Sansthan.Indira Gandhi National Performing Arts (IGNCA)- an agency of Govt of India under their Jansampda collection will showcase through short films that when people perform traditional cultural practices regularly and remember them, help in the preservation of intangible cultural heritage.

Prof Dr. Amareswar Galla, Professor of Inclusive Cultural Leadership & Director, International Centre for Inclusive Cultural Leadership (ICICL), Anant National University, Ahemdabad; Director, International Institute for the Inclusive Museum and a UNESCO Heritage expert explains “how the culture and especially intangible or living culture can be a driver in developmental initiatives”. He added that “Culture is the language of healing post-pandemic and its rehabilitation is the most meaningful way Indigenous heritage could be honored and revitalized.” It will be the main focus of the webinar.
