Hayagriva Madhava Temple is a holy place of bothHindus and Bhuddhists. The shrine is positioned at Monikut hill and the hill is located at Hajo which lies in the state of Assam. The temple has gained its solid structure by mean of King Raghudeva Narayan in 1583. The image of Hayagriva Madhava is worshipped here. Hayagriva signifies Lord Vishnu having the head of horse. Hayagriva consists of two words viz ‘Haya’ which means horse and ‘griva’ which means neck. Lord Buddha had visited this place and had gained Nirvana or Moksha. It is highly esteemed sanctum of India. The body of the temple is characterized by the rows of elephants. It is a finest example of Assamese architecture. The temple is completely made up of stone. The glory of this temple is at par.

Getting There

One can reach Hayagriva Madhava Temple by mean of three modes: road, rail and air. There is a regular bus service to reach towards Guwhati. The railway station is also situated near Guwhati. The airport is also situated near Guwhati. After reaching Guwhati one can hire local bus or taxi to reach towards the shrine.

When To Visit

This temple can be visited any time of the year. Its timings are: 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The duration of visiting the temple is 30 minutes. There is no entry fee to visit the temple.

What To See And Do

For reaching towards the shrine of Hayagriva Madhava Temple one has to climb a long series of stairs. It consists of large entrance hall which is made up of bricks. The outer portion of the shrine is designed by 10 figures in which Buddha is the nineth one. The temple has three fragments i.e. the Sikhara, the high basement and the middle part of the sanctum. The basement is designed beautifully. The main sanctum consists of different stone deities in which the presiding one is of Hayagriva Madhava. The divine deities made up of black stone, which is covered with white garment and decorated with flowers and garlands. The main sanctum is just like a cave.
